Holy & Whole: Ethics at the Intersection of Faith and Sexuality
When a pastor and an atheist host a course together, collaboration is divine.
Course Purpose
This live, in person course pairs a Protestant Reverend and Sex Educator with an atheist Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Sex Therapist (LPC-S, CST). Together, we address the relationship between theology and sexuality in clinical practice, supporting both client wellbeing and clinician integrity. The aim is to provide you with information and a practical framework for holding complexity without pathologizing or disparaging anyone's beliefs (or non-belief), desires, or identity.
Ethics Credit Alignment: This course addresses ethical risk, clinical decision-making, and bias mitigation at the intersection of faith and sexuality. Content aligns with core ethical principles, scope of practice, cultural and religious responsiveness, and professional responsibility as set forth by APA, NASW, ACA, AASECT, and AAMFT.
Course Objectives
- Evaluate the influence of personal religious, secular, or cultural identity on clinical judgment
- Analyze the theological and cultural roots of sexual shame within Mainline Protestant Christianity
- Apply a sex-positive, tradition-informed lens to concerns at the intersection of sex and faith
- Demonstrate ethically competent practice at the religion-sexuality interface
