Ethical Foundations for a Sex Positive Practice, Module 2: Diversity & Intersectionality
Module Purpose
This module explores how intersecting identities, power dynamics, and sociocultural context shape dynamics and ethical dilemmas in clinical practice.
Ethics Credit Alignment: This module directly addresses justice, non-discrimination, power differentials, cultural context, and ethical decision-making in alignment with professional ethical codes.
Learning Objectives
- Address the concept of intersectionality and its implications for ethical decision-making in sex therapy.
- Reflect on how intersecting aspects of identity and professional role influence bias, privilege, and power in clinical practice.
- Integrate an “informed, but not knowing” stance as an ethical posture that balances professional knowledge with the expanse of individual identity and diversity.
Why This Matters
Ethical dilemmas do not occur in a vacuum. Clients’ experiences of sexuality, safety, and access to care are shaped by overlapping identities and systemic forces. Without an intersectional lens, clinicians risk imposing dominant narratives, overlooking power imbalances, and unintentionally perpetuating harm. This module strengthens ethical clarity by situating decision-making within real-world complexity.
